Here is one of the biggest questions of our time in an age where materialism and individualism are rampant – Who am I, who are you, who are we? Our understanding of ourselves and of others colours our understanding of creation and reality. The mountain, river, land, and people of Whanganui are acknowledged first, as this is the place from which my music arises. My own iwi of Ngapuhi, Ngāti Kahungunu Ki te Wairoa, and Ngāti Pāhauwera are also acknowledged as this is who I am, and what forms the vessel of expression and interpretation for the mōteatea.

Next a whakapapa (genealogy) we all share as the children of Ranginui (Sky Father) and Papatuānuku (Earth Mother), and as mokopuna (grandchildren) of the World of Light (mārama) is shared. The mōteatea echoes the renown tohunga and tohuna Nanny Rose Peres’ teachings on Rā-ngāti-rā, commonly interpreted as chiefliness. She teaches that we are all the living breath and expression of the Central Divine Sun.
